When microbiologist Dr. Maxwell Silverman discovers a strange, glowing organism in a remote Florida lake, he knows he has found something extraordinary. He brings a small sample back to his university laboratory, where he and graduate student Sandra Sanders begin searching for an answer to a seemingly simple question:

What does it eat?

Not sugars. Not traditional nutrients. Nothing they try produces any growth.
