Halloween Without The Hallowed
Maberry has been a favorite writer of mine for going-on 15 years when I began his Joe Ledger series. It’s no surprise to me that I’ve missed other collections and series he’s penned. My great regret is that I didn’t read the Pine Deep series earlier.
I like my horror fast-paced and told through the eyes of strong-willed and capable characters. I love stories that put the monsters squarely in their realm of terror. I enjoy it when the writer delves into the far-reaches of humanity’s disbelief and fear.
Maberry does not write about fluffy werewolves or shiny vampires. There is a lot…a furious lot of blood, gore, mayhem, and viscous matter flying around in Pine Deep. There are “humans” who lack humanity, blacker than the depths of swamp water.
Hallowed does not describe Halloween in Pine Deep. Survival is not necessarily “of the fittest” but those most determined to live. Not for the faint of heart, but for those who crave the persistence of heart-strong warriors. Maberry brings it and buries it.
