Barford Abbey

Publisher Description

Barford Abbey is a short romance tale of Lord Darcey and Miss Worley written in a series of letters. Though Miss Worley was an orphan, she was beloved by all who beheld her. For Lord Darcey it was love at first sight. In his letters to his favorite friend, Lord Darcey poured out his heart to Mr. Molesworth. Likewise, Miss Worley poured out her heart to Lady Mary Sutton. As with all gothic tales, there were seeming obstacles. In a promise to his dying father, Lord Darcey was to consult Sir James in all major matters of his life, including approval of his choice of a bride. Darcey knew Sir James desired him to marry into a family of fortune. He also knew Miss Worley was without fortune. This single obstacle prevented him from pouring out his heart many times to Miss Worley, but instead he appeared awkward, confused, and mysterious to her. Even still in her heart she loved him until one evening she heard him say it was doubtful he would ever marry. In his defense, he was put on the spot in front of company and Sir James and in his confusion he said those regretted words. Here is where the gothic tale descends into gloominess.
