Almost all the scenes of the book are historical, and are employed to give their terrible emphasis to that which is equally true in the serenest. There was a catastrophe in Chicago. The thread of this story is carried rapidly through that period of unparalleled excitement and disaster. Read the story to know the rude conditions of that time!
