Publisher Description

Battling Bowes is the story of the professional boxing career of George Bowes, the terror of the bantamweight and the featherweight divisions in the 1950s and 60s. He was a sporting hero in the North East with a large following. Working as a coal-filler in the Durham mines, the pale-faced pitman had such a devastating punch that most of the champions of the day tried to avoid him. He knocked out the European champion inside two rounds and the British champion in the first round. Both were non-title fights and both champions refused to put their titles on the line against Bowes. He was such an exciting fighter that his appearance on a boxing show usually meant it was a sell-out. The promoters loved him. His only handicap was he cut easily. There were usually fifty shades of claret at a Bowes fight. Boxing fans will enjoy this action packed story of one of boxing's forgotten heroes.
