Publisher Description

The kingdom is falling into ruin. The reclusive King is imposing higher and higher taxes and those who cannot pay are imprisoned.

Leona Winters never imagined herself a barmaid – but it’s the only job she’s been able to get, the only thing keeping her from prison and her dying mother supplied with the medicine that she needs. But when the tavern can no longer afford to keep Leona and she can't pay the Collectors, she's thrown into jail, deep in the heart of the castle...where she meets the Beast.

For years, the Beast has run the dark palace, hiding its secrets in silence. He cannot speak; and yet Leona can hear him. He never thought it was possible - and now he can't let her leave.

He strikes her a bargain: a position in the castle, room and board for her mother, in exchange for her help in breaking the dark curse that has settled over the kingdom.

But some curses weren't meant to be broken. And the cost might be Leona's life.

Phenomenal Writing!

It’s a rendition of a tale we know and love - Beauty and the Beast. The author’s voice and writing style are absolutely fantastic. I’ve re-read this book twice since I downloaded it over a year ago. Each time, I’m swept away. A must read (and reread!)

Great Take on a Classic

First off I’m a big fairy tale nerd, especially different views or modern versions. I love Maya Emmerich’s approach to the traditional Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. It is very historic in the medieval-like setting, truly showing the harsh world the main character Leona lives in.
This is not an immersive novel in the sense it is not detail-heavy for a historical novel. But for the fantasy-historical category, it is perfect. I highly recommend it to all those who love fairy tales. There is slight violence, but nothing excessive or gory and definitly necissary to the story.
I recommend it for young adult/teen readers to those older than dirt. I hope to see more from this author in the future! Good job Maya Emmerich!
