Beautiful Joe was a dog from the town of Meaford, Ontario. The real Beautiful Joe was an Airedale-type dog. He was medium-sized, brown, and described as likely being part bull terrier and part fox terrier. He was also described as a mongrel, a cur, and a mutt. He was originally owned by a local Meaford man, who cruelly abused the dog to the point of near death, and even cut off his ears and tail. Beautiful Joe is an autobiography and the story from Beautiful Joe's viewpoint.

Beautiful Joe
When I was a child, I read this book and it became one of my favorites. Beautiful Joe is a beautiful story. I just re-read it and I had forgotten just how wonderful it is and why I loved it so much as a child. That it is based on a true story only makes it better. The message of this book is not just for children, it is for anybody who loves animals and nature. Well worth a read or a re-read.

I read this book as a child. I loved it then and and even more now. I think this book should be read by everyone. God bless all creatures great and small.
