In a bleak future built on virtual reality, Ginn is a romantic who yearns for something real. She designs environments for people who play at being Vikings. But when her project goes awry, she’s stranded in the actual 10th century, on a storybook farm in Viking Iceland.

Heirik is the young leader of his family, honored by the men and women who live on his land. But he is feared and isolated because of a terrible curse. Ginn and Heirik are two people who never thought they would find a home in someone else’s heart. When forces rise against them to keep them apart, Ginn is called on to decide—will she give up the brutal and beautiful reality of the past? Or will she have the courage to traverse time and become more of a Viking than she ever imagined?

Polyglot/linguistics fiction, yay!

When I watched the movie Arrival, with the attempt to communicate with aliens who had a language structured like no earthly one, I was squirming with excitement in my seat. I didn’t quite get the timestream slipping, but a second viewing might help.

A second reading of this novel will be for the pure pleasures of it. The linguistics, the Icelandic language, the method of time travel, and Iceland itself, all contributed to a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Since Surtsey emerged/was formed, I have been aware of Iceland. In college my linguistics prof/advisor, later friend, had stories about her time there writing her doctoral thesis.

Then more tectonics (California girl here, earthquakes have been in my life since the early 60s), history, spirituality & sacred places, then even more tectonics, and I want to learn the language—it sounds so beautiful.

Only current tectonics are missing from this novel, but in place of that, there is so much more. Romance, adjustment to a new world and culture, lovely descriptions of a beautiful land, a good plot, character development—and characters that draw me into the story, are all found in this book.

I bought the second in the series midway through the book. Does that indicate how much I enjoyed this novel?

Loved it!

It took a moment to get into the story but once you're there it was hard to put down! Great job, Larissa Brown!
