Becoming is a memoir written by former First Lady Michelle Obama. It tracks her life from childhood to the day the Obamas leave the White House. The book gives the reader a sense of what has made Michelle who she is, and the perspective she has on the many issues that relate to class, race, and gender. We get a sense of her family life, her core personality traits, and all the events and people that helped to form who she is. 


Becoming is divided into three parts: “Becoming Me”, “Becoming Us”, and “Becoming More.” The first part, “Becoming Me,” covers Michelle’s childhood on Chicago’s South Side through college at Princeton and Harvard Law School to her first few years as a lawyer. We meet her family and friends, the people who have helped form her. The second part, “Becoming Us,” is about Michelle and Barack’s life as a couple, their journey into parenthood, Michelle’s transition out of law and Barack’s transition into politics. The third part, “Becoming More,” gives an overview of Michelle and Barack’s life in the White House.
