Before the Chase

When Mia’s father abandons his family, his wife falls into a deep depression. Although she’s only 14, Mia must take on roles and responsibilities that ensure her siblings are fed, clothed, and protected from the dark rages of their mother. She describes how the challenges of poverty, physical abuse and family secrets affect the small family, while still finding ways to enjoy her teen years with high school parties, playing cards, and her first love.
