The Grand Hotel Slowly Reveals Her Secrets
Walk through Doors to the Past via a new series of historical stories of romance and adventure.
Two successful women, a hundred-and-twenty-years apart, build walls to protect their hearts. Modern-day Willa, a successful interior decorator, is chosen to go to Mackinac Island and consult for the Grand Hotel’s possible redesign. During work on a room, she discovers a journal detailing the struggles of a young woman, Lily—which reveals dark secrets. The renowned singer wasn’t who she pretended to be.
As Willa reaches out to Lily’s descendant, a charismatic and prominent landscape artist, she lets down her guard. Should she share the journal with him—revealing hidden history—or once again erect a wall as she struggles to redesign both the Grand and her life?
CARRIE FANCETT PAGELS, Ph.D., awarding-winning author of over twenty Christian fiction books, is a former psychologist of 25 years and enjoys spending her summers at the Straits of Mackinac, where this story is set.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Fancett Pagels (Butterfly Cottage) weaves an overstuffed dual-timeline tale of love and mystery set at the picturesque Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Upper Michigan. In 1895, itinerant singer Lily Swaine is spending the summer as a songbird at the hotel. She never stays in one place for long, is always one step ahead of the secrets in her past, and struggles to trust in a God who allows so many "terrible things" to befall her. A romance with psychiatrist Stephen DuBlanc, who harbors secrets of his own, may help renew her faith and convince her to put down roots. In 2020, hotel designer and HGTV star Willa Christy returns to her home on the Upper Peninsula to consult on a redesign of the Grand Hotel, and happens on Lily's journal, uncovered in a room she's renovating, and begins to wonder about her, recalling stories both of a female murderer and arsonist named Lily. Willa becomes even more intrigued when she realizes Michael DuBlanc, the landscape architect she's been falling for, is related to Lily. While the two core plots hold appeal, a profusion of subplots and the tangle of intertwined relationships in one close community (over two timelines) can make the narrative a challenge to follow. Romance fans looking for escapism might end up needing a flowchart to keep up with this one.

Behind Love’s Wall
Carrie Pagels continues to outdo herself! Behind Love’s Wall is part of the Barbour’s Doors to the Past series but each book can be read as a stand alone. If you’re a fan of Christian historical fiction and/or dual timeline stories buy this book today. You will devour it. This is a wonderful story that is so interesting and keeps you wanting to turn the pages. Yet it’s one of those books that you want to read it slowly to savor it. I loved the way it went back and forth between the past and present day. I loved that it was a mystery and love story combined. The characters and scenes are so well developed that you feel like you personally know the everyone and are part of their family. Through the author's words you can easily imagine that you live on Mackinac Island. Behind Love’s Wall is filled with faith, family, mystery, and intrigue.
