Publisher Description
Beka Cooper's journals describe her training, promotion, and success as a policewoman (dog) in Tortall. From the back alleys of Corus, to the sewers of Port Caynn, to the backwoods of the north country, Beka will not let her quarry escape.
Tamora Pierce's first tales told in first person give marvelous insight into the complex and wonderful character of Beka, whose strength, loyalty, and goodness are an inspiration to all those around her . . . except perhaps the criminals.

A Library Staple
So, this girl would not classify herself as being into fantasy, but ever since I came across the Alanna series almost two decades ago, I’ve been a fan of Tamora Pierce.
I find that writers aren’t always successful when they try to write stories that predate their original series, but Pierce did an excellent job coming up with exciting storylines and beautifully flawed characters. I liked how strong Beka was in both career and character; she knew what she wanted and went for it while still remaining human. She made mistakes and that was ok because she learned from them and got better.
I think my least favorite storyline was part of Mastiff. I don’t understand women who are with men that they don’t really like. What’s the point of being in a relationship if there’s no love or passion? So the whole Holborne piece bothered me. However, first, it wasn’t an active relationship, so I didn’t have to suffer through scenes of the them together; and second, I understand the overlying reason for it, so I won’t hate on it too much.
To further press how much I enjoy this series, I have to say that I reread it at least once a year, so definitely check it out.
