Publisher Description

In the home where Arabella Godwin was raised it is forbidden to speak her name, and her picture is turned to the wall. But in the turbulent America of the 1850s, everyone knows her as "Belle Cora," madam of San Francisco's finest bordello. Judges and senators do her bidding; a vicious newspaper editor plots her downfall; a preacher looks at her from across his pulpit and tries to forget that once she was his wife. Merchant's daughter, farm girl, prostitute, mother, madam, murderess, avenger, protector—she has worn all these masks: the only thing that never changes is her tireless pursuit of the one man who can see her for who she really is.

Great + Interesting + A Little Too Long

This is a great read and well-written. You do what you've got to do to survive ... and then some. I found the topic of prostitution interesting and intriguing. Interesting how morally righteous people think they are, yet willing to butter both sides of their bread.
I loved the history of the book, especially San Francisco since I don't live too far away. Belle: is she evil, cold, or a byproduct of her circumstances? Does everyone have a breaking point? There are some wonderful twists and turns to this book and just when your form one opinion you may question it and change your mind. My only complaint of the book is that it's too long; meaning, there are some pieces of the book that I did not feel added anything to the storyline, but pages. Still a recommended read.
