Winner: 2022 Hugo Award for Best Series
A glorious fantasy tale from Seanan McGuire's Alex-award winning Wayward Children series, which began in the Alex, Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Award-winning, World Fantasy Award finalist, Tiptree Honor List Every Heart a Doorway
Beneath the Sugar Sky, the third book in McGuire's Wayward Children series, returns to Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children in a standalone contemporary fantasy for fans of all ages. At this magical boarding school, children who have experienced fantasy adventures are reintroduced to the "real" world.
When Rini lands with a literal splash in the pond behind Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children, the last thing she expects to find is that her mother, Sumi, died years before Rini was even conceived. But Rini can’t let Reality get in the way of her quest – not when she has an entire world to save! (Much more common than one would suppose.)
If she can't find a way to restore her mother, Rini will have more than a world to save: she will never have been born in the first place. And in a world without magic, she doesn’t have long before Reality notices her existence and washes her away. Good thing the student body is well-acquainted with quests...
A tale of friendship, baking, and derring-do.

APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Move over, Willy Wonka! There’s a new fantasyland made of sugar, and it’s not for the faint of heart or humour. Confection has a buttercream moon, a sea of soda, and shortbread bedrock—it doesn’t sound dark, but it really, really is. The third instalment in Seanan McGuire’s Wayward Children fantasy series can be read in or out of order, since the books’ characters overlap but their quests start and end within each book. Beneath the Sugar Sky is a treat: a fast-paced, funny, and clever story that does a great job of world-building.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
McGuire's delicious third book (after 2017's Down Among the Sticks and Bones) to feature the teens of Eleanor West's Home for Wayward Children kids who have found doors to fantastical worlds and are desperate to return to them opens with a girl falling from the sky into a pond on school grounds, causing quite a stir. Rini Onishi has come from a world called Confection to get back her mother, Sumi. Inconveniently, Sumi is dead, and she'll need to be rebuilt from the bones up so that Rini's life won't be undone. Several of the strange children at the home offer to help Rini, but when they get to Confection, they're captured by the fearsome Queen of Cakes. What follows is a lush, darkly whimsical adventure full of wonders such as a pink soda sea, candy corn fields, and a castle made of gingerbread, all made grim by the characters' desperation to get Rini's mother back before it's too late. Readers will be thrilled to see old friends and meet new ones in this scrumptious tale that emphasizes acceptance, kindness, and the enduring value of friendship.
