A note from CALIDER
Notice how often pressure arrives in the language of care: advice, praise, extra lessons, and plans made for Hans’s future. Hesse sets these voices against the river, woods, and friendships that make another kind of life imaginable. Use the notes and glossary as the school world thickens, then return through the motif guide, map, timeline, and discussion questions to trace what the narrator reveals—and withholds.

Read an excerpt — Chapter One
Mr. Joseph Giebenrath, middleman and agent, was distinguished from his fellow townsmen by no merits or peculiarities whatever. Like them, he possessed a broad, healthy build, a passable talent for commerce coupled with a sincere and heartfelt reverence for money, and furthermore a small house with a little garden, a family grave in the cemetery, a churchgoing piety grown somewhat enlightened and threadbare, a proper respect for God and the authorities, and a blind submissiveness to the iron commandments of middle-class respectability. He drank many a glass but was never drunk. On the side he undertook a number of not quite irreproachable deals, but he never carried them beyond the limits of what was formally permitted. He railed at poorer people as starvelings and at richer people as show-offs. He was a member of the Citizens’ Club and took part every Friday in the ninepins at the Eagle, and also in every baking day, stew supper, and sausage feast. For work he smoked cheap cigars; after dinner and on Sundays, a finer brand.

About the author
Hermann Hesse was born on 2 July 1877 in Calw, a small town on the northern edge of the Black Forest in Württemberg. He grew up in a Swabian Pietist household with close ties to India. His father, Johannes Hesse, was a Baltic-German missionary born in Estonia. His mother, Marie Gundert, was the daughter of Hermann Gundert, who served with the Basel Mission in South India and compiled a grammar and dictionary of Malayalam. Gundert gave the boy the run of a large library of world literature. Two things shaped the household: a strict, inward Protestant piety and a respect for learning that reached well beyond Germany. Hesse spent much of his later life arguing with the first and drawing on the second.
