An NPR Book of the Day

Picking up where the New York Times bestselling Front Row at the Trump Show left off, this is the explosive look at the aftermath of the election—and the events that followed Donald Trump’s leaving the White House all the way to January 6—from ABC News' chief Washington correspondent.

Nobody is in a better position to tell the story of the shocking final chapter of the Trump show than Jonathan Karl. As the reporter who has known Donald Trump longer than any other White House correspondent, Karl told the story of Trump’s rise in the New York Times bestseller Front Row at the Trump Show. Now he tells the story of Trump’s downfall, complete with riveting behind-the-scenes accounts of some of the darkest days in the history of the American presidency and packed with original reporting and on-the-record interviews with central figures in this drama who are telling their stories for the first time.

This is a definitive account of what was really going on during the final weeks and months of the Trump presidency and what it means for the future of the Republican Party, by a reporter who was there for it all. He has been taunted, praised, and vilified by Donald Trump, and now Jonathan Karl finds himself in a singular position to deliver the truth.

Disloyalty, Betrayal When It Mattered Most

On November 8th I saw ABC News' Jonathan Karl appear on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The news Karl broke about the existence of photographic images of Pence hiding during the January 6th deadly Capital riot, as well as Pence's admirable role and actions on that horrible day got me to pre-order this book that night. Karl's reporting on the relationship between Trump and Pence from election night until Biden's inauguration is riveting and frighteningly revealing.

This book highlights Liz Cheney as the most admirably sensible and emotional stable Republican today in Washington. Karl does not say this -- but is Liz Cheney perhaps the Republican's best presidential hope in 2024 for a return this normalcy? Karl says he does not know if Trump will run for president again. Maybe Cheney will be his most formidable opponent?

Maria Bartiromo is widely praised for her extensive work as a financial journalist on CNN, CNBC and Fox. Karl reports on many instances where Bartiromo helped Trump push and promote false claims of fraud the election. What happened to her?

If you don't know who John McEntee then you should read this book. Reagan’s success was due in part to his willingness to surround himself with intelligent advisors and many differing opinions. McEntee symbolizes Trump’s presidential mania because McEntee spearheaded the elimination of constructive ideas and criticism around Trump. Karl describes how Trump devolves from depending on the honorable General John Kelly to the 28-year-old John McEntee, whose main job was to remove political appointees not loyal enough to Trump while hiring Rockette Dancers and Instagram Influencers with impeccable foreign policy experience.

I enjoyed reading about ABC News reporter Will Steakin. Karl’s profile of him covering five huge Trump rallies a day while Biden chose the risk-adverse strategy of staying in his Wilmington basement convinced Steakin that -- despite the poll numbers -- Trump somehow would win again. Biden indeed did win decisively and fairly; however, history will view Joe Biden as the ultimate compromise candidate among a field more dynamic and inspiring democrats.

Karl asserts that he has been critical of Pence over the years. However, by far the book's best breaking news is exactly how and when Pence "Betrayed Trump When It Mattered Most." Karl outlines Pence’s bravery and resoluteness on January 6th as he ensured the election results were certified by all 50 states despite the chaos and murder; this was a remarkable day in America's history and Pence did not disappoint.

Karl details how many Cabinet members chose to manage Trump -- "The Effective Presidential Delay Tactic". Whether it was Esper or Miller, many Cabinet members were in agreement about how to save Trump and the Nation from the President himself: Treat him obsequiously as if disciplining a petulant teenage boy.

This morning I finished Karl's book. I found myself pausing often to research individuals, events and articles referenced — the sign of a superb book, fiction or non-fiction.
