Between Steeple and Stove

A Huguenot Gourmet

Publisher Description

Protestantism is often regarded as a community having little to do with earthly pleasures and especially with those relating to food and drink. It’s true that traces of puritanism have left their mark, but the individual relationship of the believer with God and with the Bible open up numerous possibilities to fully enjoy this fleeting world. In this highly palatable work of fiction, Olivier Bauer shows what affinities there can be between faith and the table, between spirituality and the pleasures of eating well. The characters in this book draw from the Bible a whole series of arguments in favour of this association, which combines pleasure, relationship with God and solidarity. To be found here are famous Biblical passages about food alongside others less well known, which, coming from a pastor, a cook and a teenager, open up to a joyous approach to the love of God and humanity.

Olivier Bauer has a PhD in Theology. He has performed youth ministry work in the canton of Neuchâtel in Switzerland, was school chaplain in French Polynesia and Pastor for the French-speaking Church of Washington, DC. He was assistant in practical theology at the University of Lausanne and is currently associate professor at the Faculty of Theology and the Sciences of Religion at the University of Montreal.
