Beyond the Last Silence

Their love survived in secret. Their home may not survive the truth.

Years before their worlds officially met, Iriath-of-the-Last-Light saved a lost human survey ship—and fell in love with Samuel Orren.

Now they help lead Cynosure, the embassy station built to bring their civilizations together. Iriath is a woman of living plasma, sustained by an open lattice of superconductive rings. Samuel is its fifty-six-year-old human co-director, a former historian who helped erase the encounter that changed their lives. They called their silence protection. It also kept them apart.

Then the Far Gate broadcasts a signal from their secret courtship, and habitats across Cynosure begin sealing shut.

To discover who is turning their shared history into a weapon, Iriath and Samuel must examine the records they once concealed. Every discovery brings back a moment of their unfinished love—and a question neither can evade.

Working together rekindles the patience, humor, and desire that first drew them close. But longing cannot undo a lie, and protecting each other has too often meant deciding for everyone else.

With lives at risk and their authority unraveling, they must confront the past without controlling what others make of it—and discover whether the people they have become can choose each other without hiding again.
