Publisher Description
The original novel tying into the critically acclaimed and much-missed Firefly series from creator Joss Whedon.
The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot." But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true...
While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war. As the rest of the crew struggle to locate him, Mal is placed on trial for his life, fighting compelling evidence that someone did indeed betray them to the Alliance all those years ago. As old comrades and old rivals crawl out of the woodwork, Mal must prove his innocence, but his captors are desperate and destitute, and will settle for nothing less than the culprit's blood.

🥺 It’s all here, the crew, the ship, the verse. 😍
Given how many times authors have tried and failed to copy the Firfly formula, I’m impressed at how well the book was able to maintain the essence of the show. It never felt like I was reading a spin-off or some elaborate fan-fiction, it felt like Firefly ❤️, as if the show never ended (I can dream).
It also has some of the better callbacks that I’ve seen in a media tie in book. Usually callbacks are just used as easter eggs for longtime fans to say, “I remember that!” But here the callbacks are actually relevant to what’s going on, while still giving you that sense of nostalgia.
My only complaint is the story itself. It’s not a bad story, it’s actually a very good one, but it’s a story I feel shouldn’t have been told. I don’t like it for the same reason I didn’t like the idea of the Joker movie. Like the Joker, one of the most compelling things about Mal is that we don’t really know a whole lot about him. Mal always avoided talking about his personal life, only dropping little tidbits on rare occasions, and I think it should’ve stayed that way.
That, and it makes me miss the show even more. 😢
A Slog, Sadly
31% done and I am through with the book. It lacks the charm of the series and seems to drag quite a bit. DNF.
just like watching an episode of the show!
For the most part, this was perfect. Honestly, if I could give an extra half- or three-quarters star, I would. This felt like I was watching a new aaaaaaaajj of the series, save for the occasional minor distraction in the form of inconsistent dialogue here and there. Not nearly enough to keep me from devouring the next book in the series. And if you lo"e Firefly 1I _highly encourage you to read this book! It may not be Joss, but it's gorramn _Firefly!!!
