Stephen King’s “Billy Summers,” like most of his product, is very readable.
Mr. King introduces us to a cast of characters and situations which frankly could have been invented by many other authors, but he does so in an entertaining enough manner.
His descriptive ability is on display as is his famous momentum. This book glides along at an agreeable pace.
I have often thought of Stephen King as a writer who captures on paper the flow of a great storyteller who is spinning a tale around a campfire. As in the rest of his oeuvre his style remains intact.
Still, like a neighbor who is very interesting to talk with but has a tendency toward talking as long as one will listen to them, it’s fair to wonder after reading this story if it justifies its length.
I’m not interested in editing the best selling author in the universe (nor am I pretending to be qualified to do so!). Rather I would recommend that readers set limits. Half an hour per day (or per sitting) or maybe a chapter a day, or whatever works.
It would be interesting to see the choices Mr. King would make if he wrote this as a short story, but in a way it feels like he has woven together a series of short stories to create a longer one.
I’m certainly glad that I read this book, but I expect I will re-read several other King books before I even consider reading this one again.
