Some newspapers are older than their cities. The bloodline of the Birmingham Post-Herald reaches back to 1850 — to a small Jefferson County paper printed before Birmingham itself existed — and runs through the Iron Age and the Daily Herald, the papers that grew up alongside the furnaces of the Magic City.

The modern story begins in January 1921, when Ed Leech and the crusading Scripps-Howard chain launched The Birmingham Post into one of the South's most competitive newspaper towns. The Post caught fire — circulation soaring from eight thousand to nearly fifty thousand in just five years. In May 1950 it joined with the venerable Birmingham Age-Herald, and the Birmingham Post-Herald was born: the morning voice of Alabama's industrial capital.

Its finest hour came in the crucible. On May 14, 1961, Post-Herald photographer Tommy Langston raised his camera as Klansmen attacked the Freedom Riders at Birmingham's Trailways station. His photograph shocked the nation — and captured, standing in the mob, an FBI informant. One frame from a hometown paper became evidence that history could not ignore.

For more than eight decades the Post-Herald told Birmingham's story — through iron and steel, through struggle and transformation — until September 23, 2005, when the final edition rolled and a masthead whose roots spanned three centuries went quiet.
