Bindi and Julian’s story continues some months after the events in First Oath. Julian has been mia and Bindi believes he’s done with her. Then he shows up on the steps of The Black Fan severely injured. Now he asks her to pretend to be his fiancée so that he can convince some nobles to invest in his business. While the two act the part true feelings simmer underneath the surface.
I liked the fake fiancé to real love story. It’s well done with lots of action to keep you on the edge of your seat. The epilogue is a bit of a disconnect for me. It talks of a resistance not mentioned anywhere else in the story and the consequences of their actions. I suppose it’s to support the synthetic blood business that Julian is starting but it just seems an odd ending to an otherwise good story.
