Wonderful
Black Mountain Breakdown is Lee Smith’s story of a family in the Appalachian Mountains. The protagnoist is Crystal Spangler, a good-hearted and vulnerable soul who starts out with so much promise. But how will her story end? I know people who were disappointed in the ending, but to me, it is authentic. Unfortunately, life doesn’t always give us neat, tied-up endings. Lee Smith is great at devloping characters that we care about deeply. She also excels at melding mountain history and culture naturally into the story, without sounding like she is writing a research paper. Yet there was obviously a good deal of research for this book. I highly recommend it. I would love to read a sequel, and I believe that it would make a great movie!
