A piercing collection of essays on racial tension in America and the ongoing fight for visibility, change, and lasting hope, from the Viral Clark Atlanta University Commencement Speaker and Georgia Author of the Year

“There are stories that must be told.”

Acclaimed novelist and scholar Daniel Black has spent a career writing into the unspoken, fleshing out, through storytelling, pain that can’t be described.

Now, in his debut essay collection, Black gives voice to the experiences of those who often find themselves on the margins. Tackling topics ranging from:
police brutality and its disproportionate targeting of black bodies the AIDS crisis and its intersectional effects on both queer and Black folks the role of HBCUs and their roots in American history and culture queer representation, specifically within the Black church
As Daniel Black reminds us, while hope may be slow in coming, it always arrives, and when it does, it delivers beyond the imagination. Propulsive, intimate, and achingly relevant, Black on Black is cultural criticism at its openhearted best.

THIS IS A MUST READ!

I just finished “Black on Black” by Dr. Daniel Black, and I am absolutely in awe! This book weaves through the intricacies of Black culture and history in a way that I’ve never imagined. Dr. Black exquisitely uses his life experiences to address racism, homophobia, transphobia, self-loathing, spirituality, and popular culture in a way that stirs the soul. From his critique of integration, to his acknowledgment of the Orishas in Harriett Tubman’s life, to his veneration of the cultivators of Ballroom culture, this book has eternally shifted my world view. It is more than a collection of essays about Black culture. In my estimation, it is a divinely inspired text sent to liberate a generation. It is a call for Black people to be more introspective, more inclusive, and more intimately connected to our ancestral roots. THIS IS A MUST READ FOR EVERY BLACK PERSON! Please do yourself a favor and read this book!
