In a primary story arc, Tammi Wright is about to start her first day as the summer office assistant at the Apollo Theater's Harlem headquarters when she runs into ex-boyfriend Kareem Murphy, who, due to an admin-istrative error, is there for the same job. Just as they are about to find out who will receive the single opening, a blackout sweeps the city, causing chaos aboveground and under. As the two reluctantly walk together back to Bed-Stuy, where Kareem is set to DJ a party after dark, they navigate their history and their love for each other. Featured between each stage of their journey are connections—some gentle, some combative, all thrilling—that feature characters falling in or professing their love across the city's landmarks. Honestly I wasn’t expecting the story to be as much as it was, I just saw comments of black love and was super eager to get more of a taste of that. I love that the stories are broken up but because of ADHD I had to keep reminding myself who was who. In the end it all tied itself to each other which I was hoping it would and I was not disappointed. Everyone had their happy ending, Or their moment when they realized they were growing. I’m going through that mindset now, because I’m 23.. which is supposed to be one of the worst years of your life but I’ve just felt so lost and I’ve been just consuming as much information about growth as I can so that I can feel less lost, or at least safe in my change. Change is good but it’s strange as it happens, when partners change you either get with it or get lost.. and I love that this story doesn’t make either of those ideas shameful. I LOVED reading this. Thank you to all the amazing authors!!
