This is year one of the Initiate Wars. Sara is hoping it doesn't become the year she dies in an adventure fantasy for the ages.
--
It is not a peaceful time in the Algardis Empire. War is raging between the mages and seventeen-year-old Sara Fairchild will be right in the middle of it.
She just doesn't know it yet.
Sara is the daughter of a disgraced imperial commander, executed for desertion. Sara is also the best duelist and hand-to-hand combatant in Sandrin. She lives quietly with her family's shame but when challenged about her family's honor, her opponent inevitably loses.
On the night she finds out her father's true last actions, she takes the Mercenary Guilds' vows to serve in the emperor's army. Using her quick wits and fierce fighting skills, she earns a spot in the first division.
There she discovers secrets the mages on both sides would prefer stay hidden. Dark enemies hunt her and soon it's not just Sara questioning the motivation behind this war.
While fighting mages, blackmailing merchants and discovering new friends, Sara comes across something she's never had before - passion. The question is - can she fight for her empress against a mage who might unwittingly claim her heart?

Recommend if you don’t mind paying
If you don’t want to read it all, scroll to the end.
First of all, the book kept me reading and captivated me. I loved the book.
The only reason that I gave the book 4 stars is not really ABOUT the book. It is because the second book has to be bought. They get you interested in the characters, the plot and then try and make you pay… I am disappointed by this because the first book was amazing and I want to read on but I can’t.
So, overall,
⚠️DON’T GET THIS BOOK IF YOU DON’T WANT TO/ CAN’T PAY⚠️
⚠️If you want to/can, absolutely get this book :) ⚠️
Thanks for reading!
Not my type of book
I don’t want to make this review but I have to be honest. At first, it was really good but then I got uninterested. It may just be me though.
Fast paced thrilling
I didn’t realize it was over until it was. It was a fast paced action packed magical story about a girl who kinda sort of knows who she is in terms of how she exudes confidence. Despite her cynicism and the tragedy that surrounded her, there’s hope throughout that she’d open herself up and allow someone else in.
From a technical standpoint, Terah is a MASTER at delivering action scenes and tapping into what it says about Sarah. There’s a lingering mystery that isn’t solved and still you feel like you got enough story to keep you full.
Loved this. I already purchased book two and have a fan cast in my head lol.
