Bleak House

A chancery suit has ground on so long that nobody alive recalls what it was about, and the fog that opens the novel never lifts off it. Dickens runs two narrators, hides a murder mystery in the machinery, and builds the first detective in English fiction to work it out. Paintings, and decoration for the Gilded Library built out of London fog, tied bundles of brief and a guttering candle.
