Publisher Description

From "one of the nation's foremost Chicano literary artists" comes a coming-of-age classic and the bestselling Chicano novel of all time that follows a young boy as he questions his faith and beliefs -- now one of PBS's "100 Great American Reads" (Denver Post).

Antonio Marez is six years old when Ultima comes to stay with his family in New Mexico. She is a curandera, one who cures with herbs and magic. Under her wise wing, Tony will probe the family ties that bind and rend him, and he will discover himself in the magical secrets of the pagan past--a mythic legacy as palpable as the Catholicism of Latin America. And at each life turn there is Ultima, who delivered Tony into the world... and will nurture the birth of his soul.

Just Wow

This book left me speechless. I have never been into reading books, so I was reluctant to read this, but this book blew me away. I felt like I was actually there next to Antonio throughout his journey. The story floored me and I was brought to tears at the end. I’ve never cried from reading a book before. It’s amazing how well it was written and it connected with me in so many ways. This book has changed my outlook on life and I will be sure to read more books just like this from now on. Bravo Rudolfo Anaya, this was by far the best book I’ve ever read.

Bless me, ultima

A great story with the real magic in its world. The boy character was awesome, and Ultima was a pure spiritual to the family. I love it. Easy reading, and fills with the meaning of life.
