A Gotrek Gurnisson Novel
Saving the life of a blaspheming warrior priest, Gotrek finds himself bound to a new companion – and drawn to the Realm of Life, where a terrible threat is infecting its way into reality.
READ IT BECAUSE
Gotrek Gurnisson, the legendary Slayer, picks up a new accomplice – and faces a truly grotesque challenge in the disease-ridden spawn of the Plague God himself.
THE STORY
Deep in the wilds of Ghyran, a former warrior priest preaches for humanity to reject the gods. The sole survivor of a massacred Dawnbringer Crusade, Amara Fidellus believes that Sigmar has betrayed her – and when she faces execution for such blasphemy, it’s only the intervention of a drunken, taciturn and incredibly violent Slayer that saves her life.
Now bound to Gotrek Gurnisson by a life-debt, Amara finds herself caught up in his quest for revenge. But when the duo become aware of a sorcerous threat building on the far Rocanian Coast, Gotrek and Amara must put aside their own desires for retribution to confront a terrible danger that could plunge all of Ghyran into Chaos, and see a deadly aspect of Nurgle’s Garden manifest in the Mortal Realms.
Written by Richard Strachan.
Customer Reviews
If you skip this you’ll miss nothing.
This doesn’t read like Gotrek and the new companion is barely one dimensional. I hope she doesn’t come back. I actually really like the author’s other characters, and may give the author another shot but not with Gotrek.
There is no development of any of the characters here and the new companion just undoes everything we learn about her, so it’s a blank slate again if she comes back.
Depth building with Amara is attempted after the story is over, in a dream, but It would have been a lot stronger if she just died at the end. (Not a spoiler because it’s in the blurb from the publisher that she’s the new Felix/Maleneth.)
Frankly, repeatedly losing companions could be a new interesting direction to take Gotrek, put him through something he hasn’t had to deal with yet. But really I’d rather just see Maleneth come back. She is still in the middle of an arc.
But it’s important for me to state I’m not salty about Maleneth being gone, if this character had been characterized in any meaningful way I’d be content with something new, we just got Maleneth after all, so it’s not weird to have new companions. Amara all troped-up with no substance isn’t hyperbole. It’s honestly just that she is a flat-out weird character.
Gotrek just isn’t the Gotrek character in this story, it’s not that the author has a different take. Gotrek just doesn’t have much depth here.
