Publisher Description
Hailed as a masterpiece of American travel writing, Blue Highways is an unforgettable journey along our nation's backroads.
William Least Heat-Moon set out with little more than the need to put home behind him and a sense of curiosity about "those little towns that get on the map -- if they get on at all -- only because some cartographer has a blank space to fill: Remote, Oregon; Simplicity, Virginia; New Freedom, Pennsylvania; New Hope, Tennessee; Why, Arizona; Whynot, Mississippi."
His adventures, his discoveries, and his recollections of the extraordinary people he encountered along the way amount to a revelation of the true American experience.
Customer Reviews
Deserves a place on every American's bookshelf!
A classic remembrance of the kind of journey that may no longer be possible, Blue Highways has been an annual re-read for me since the '70's. Off the superslabs, and away from anything that can be called a "city", this is a celebration of what is usually disdained as "flyover" country. The journey in Ghost Dancer is something that has strong visuals and a gravity of its own towards something slower and simpler. A definite Great American Travel Journal, firmly rooted in the time it was written, and yet timeless in its ability to entertain and enlighten.
Too many technical ebook problems
Couldn’t really enjoy reading this ebook version because every time I bookmarked or left a page without marking, the app would keep taking me back to the front page that would not let me scroll past no matter how many times I restarted the app or closed out of the book.
Blue Highways
Great book, enjoy reading. Would and will read again.
