When Maren Yearly really likes someone, she wants to gobble them up—and that’s not a cutesy metaphor. Maren is an “eater,” and when her despairing mother abandons her the day after her 16th birthday, she goes in search of the father she’s never met, hoping to learn more about who or what she is. DeAngelis fills her oddball tale with touches of offbeat humor, but we never stopped feeling compassion for Maren and her predicament of longing for companionship but not being able to trust herself to become emotionally involved. Bones & All is a touching, quirky story about an outsider looking for a way to fit in.

DeAngelis , who coincidentally went vegan shortly before starting work on this novel, serves up a cannibal story that successfully blends metaphor with the macabre. Maren's 16th birthday seems too good to be true and sure enough, she awakens the morning after a near-perfect celebration with her mother to find an envelope of cash and a note from her mom: "I love you but I can't do this anymore." Ever since Maren literally devoured her babysitter when she was a little girl, her family has been on the run Maren doesn't let people get too close to her, but when they do, they're liable to get eaten. The other thing Maren's mother left her is her birth certificate, which includes the name of the father she's never known. Hopeful that she might find acceptance and answers, Maren embarks on a cross-country journey in search of her dad. Along the way she discovers often under gruesome circumstances that she is not the only one of her kind, but she is, in a very real way, destined to be alone. This story of a young woman who actually consumes anyone attracted to her provides a strange glimpse into a truly profound depth of loneliness. Maren's story also offers readers plenty to chew on: issues of feminism, family, and the very idea of flesh eating. What's more, it's a genuinely entertaining (though occasionally stomach-turning) story of a young ghoul's coming of age. Delicious fun.

An Ending That Left Me.. Unsatisfied
The author does a great job of writing in a way that gets you to read between the lines. The concept of “cannibals in love” is very intriguing, and Bones & All portrays introspective, rough, but also gentle cannibals. However, the last thirty pages left me wanting more from the story. Overall, an entertaining read and solid writing.

I watched the movie first and now that I’ve read the book I wanna say that it’s better, and it is I think it has more details, more important things that I wish the movie would have added but the ending oh my gosh I was literally crying all of chapter 12, I don’t think I’ll ever recover from it. Other than the ending💔 I do recommend it’s such a good book and it’s actually the first book I’ve ever finished reading on my own, bc I don’t usually read outside of school
Great start, terrible ending
Feels like a completely different main character in the last few chapters, like reading a completely different book. Really made the whole thing feel quite pointless.
