Two months ago, when Melinda signed up for a class in Shibari, the Japanese art of erotic rope bondage, she had thought it would be a pleasant diversion. Nothing serious. Maybe she would learn something to try with her boyfriend.

But when Irene, the little firebrand of an instructor, had caught Melinda and Erika being disrespectful, she had demanded that they stay after class. “You have a choice,” she said. “You can either drop out of the class.
