British Bookplates

In the final years of the1800s the ‘Bookplate Craze’ was at its zenith, more than 10 years had elapsed since The Studio, an Illustrated Magazine of Fine and Applied Arts, had started publishing the finest examples of these designs, championed by Editor Gleeson White. As Art Nouveau began to dominate design ideals, the Special Winter Edition of 1998-99, was dedicated to the best British Bookplates of the day, forming a snapshot of the era’s finest designs.
