Publisher Description

Over the past decade, telcos brought broadband to the four corners of Europe. But did the industry make a reasonable return on the hundreds of billions of euros it pumped into networks?

A high-level guide to the financial state of Europe’s top telcos, this is the latest update to a report first published in 2015. This study explores the progress of five of Europe’s largest telcos - Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefónica, Orange and Telecom Italia - over the past decade on a range of financial metrics.

Despite the strong demand for both mobile and fixed broadband, four of these five major groups are far less profitable than they were in 2010. Deutsche Telekom is the exception thanks to the rapid growth of its American business, which is now mounting a major challenge to AT&T and Verizon. But even Telekom’s investors have had to put up with relatively low net profits and returns on their capital. The heady days of global empire building are long gone.

If they are to roll out 5G everywhere, Europe’s leading telcos will need to convince investors they can improve their financial performance significantly. After a challenging 2018, Europe’s telecoms industry saw an uptick in 2019. But the COVID-19 crisis hit business revenues hard in 2020.
