Budd Boyd's Triumph

Budd Boyd's Triumph opens on a stormy evening at Narragansett Bay, where sixteen-year-old Budd Boyd arrives seeking honest work and a new beginning. Intelligent, dutiful, and carrying a private grief, he accepts a harsh bargain from the suspicious John Benton and enters a world of scant food, cruel treatment, and exhausting labor. Yet Budd's patience, steady good humor, and refusal to break his word reveal a boy already shaped by hardship and determined to rise by his own effort. Set against a vivid coastal landscape, the story builds through danger, mystery, and enterprise as Budd's fortunes intersect with the boy-firm of Fox Island, family secrets, and the schemes of men like Benton and Bagsley. From a near-fatal struggle with tide and storm to a bitter dispute over stolen boats and false imprisonment, Budd is forced to rely on courage, ingenuity, and loyalty. When a daring jewelry-store burglary points to Bagsley's gang, Budd sees at last the chance for justice—and for the hard-won triumph promised by his name.
