Excerpt from the Book:

“The only way to live within your means is to first detail all of your expenses. Regardless of whether you've ever examined them, the bones of your budget are already in place. Every month you earn, and every month you spend, same as the tide washing in and back out. Some costs are fixed, others in flux; some expenses are non-negotiable, others ripe for cutting. A solid budget will show you the fat. Knowing where to trim comes from a firm sense of how much you make, how much you spend and how much you owe. If you don't already have a budget, it's time to get busy.”
