Publisher Description
Beth Tanner is a beautiful lady who is used to getting her way. She broadcasts the news at Six and Ten and she doesn't like to share the spotlight. Nor does she care to share her money with those who would attempt to blackmail her.
George Hastings is a St. Louis detective who's definitely seen better days. He's been sued by a vicious, acquitted murderer and is in fear of losing his career, his daughter, and his identity. Depression and burnout may overwhelm him and then a friend asks him to look into the suspicious death of hairdresser Johnny Rogers.
Johnny was not a nice fellah. A deviant who used and mistreated people dumb enough to consider him a friend. But when it starts to look like Johnny was killed, Hastings digs deeper into the lives of the seedy, beautiful people.

Well done Mr. Hunt!
The author weaves several story lines together into a nice tight little novel. The dialogue moves the stories along nicely and never confuses the reader. The somewhat stereotypical police drama characters are realistic and interesting without being exaggerated or caricatured. As a lawyer myself, I appreciated the accuracy of the author's descriptions of the legal situations and proceedings. The flashback of the local TV anchor woman's teen age "misdeed" was a surprising little twist that revealed much about her while at the same time raising the question "is she evil, or insane?". No matter, it made her much more interesting. And, the ending involving the ne'er do well grown up rich kid is "executed" so well that it leaves the reader wondering "was it really a surprise or should I have seen it coming?". This was my first, but certainly not my last, reading of James Patrick Hunt's excellent work
