Publisher Description

Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane marry and go to spend their honeymoon at Talboys, an old farmhouse in Hertfordshire which he has bought her as a present. The honeymoon is intended as a break from their usual routine of solving crimes (him) and writing about them (her), but it turns into a murder investigation when the seller of the house is found dead at the bottom of the cellar steps with severe head injuries.

Busman's Honeymoon is a 1937 novel by Dorothy L. Sayers, her eleventh (and last) featuring Lord Peter Wimsey. It is the fourth and last novel to feature Harriet Vane.

I never managed to get a copy of this before, so it is as new to me as the J. Walsh continuations.

There are many references with which I am unacquainted, and a few I was unable to track down.

The story of Peter and Harriet in their first month of marriage, and the adjustments they and Bunter have to make in the expanded household is full of predicament. The love story and the mystery go hand in hand, and in the end the love and the couple triumph in harmonious ways.

I don’t know how I’d live in a house with one or more ghosts: my husband lived in one as a child, and they were indeed mostly fragments of a long ago resident, with the exception of one, who was just not ready to go on. All benign. The Civil War conscientious objector once put out a grease fire on the stove, upon being asked for help.

When you have two persons of strong mind ling accustomed to living on their own, some adjustments to a joint household are necessary! How they navigate this is a test, which Sayers extensively details.

It was enjoyable and satisfying.
