Joseph Rudyard Kipling (30 Dec 1865 – 18 Jan 1936) was an English short story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book, Kim, and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King". He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story.

By Word of Mouth is a short story by Rudyard Kipling. It follows Dumoise, a Civil Surgeon in a small station. He married and lived in bliss with his wife for a year. But sickness took her, crashing the idyll and breaking Dumoise down. But one day he meets a man, saying that he had seen Mamsahib, doctor’s late wife, and that she had left him a message.
