Publisher Description

In this masterful portrait of the poet who dazzled an era and prefigured the modern age of celebrity, noted biographer Benita Eisler offers a fuller and more complex vision than we have yet been afforded of George Gordon, Lord Byron.

Eisler reexamines his poetic achievement in the context of his extraordinary life: the shameful and traumatic childhood; the swashbuckling adventures in the East; the instant stardom achieved with the publication ofChilde Harold's Pilgrimage; his passionate and destructive love affairs, including an incestuous liaison with his half-sister; and finally his tragic death in the cause of Greek independence. This magnificent record of a towering figure is sure to become the new standard biography of Byron.

Questionable “facts”

While Eisler’s book is very readable, her scholarship could have been a bit better. Her portrayal of Dr. Polidori is nothing more than a cruel smear and the Shelleys don’t fare any better. When did Mary Shelley ever try to kindle a romance with Byron after Percy Shelley drowned? This is the one and only book I’ve read about the Shelleys, Byron or Polidori to make that claim. Eisler further makes it seem as if Byron had almost quit drinking at the end of his life, failing to mention that his autopsy found cirrhosis of the liver. There are other gaps and jumbled facts throughout the book. While the book is passable as a general overview, there are definitely much better books about Byron’s life out there. Try “Poor Polidori” by D.L. Macdonald for a better understanding of Dr. Polidori and “The Poet and the Vampyre” by Andrew McConnell Scott about the Diodati Summer. “Byron” by Fiona MacCarthy was better than Eisler’s book.
