This historical novel is set in New Madrid, Missouri, at the time of the great earthquake of 1811. Seventeen-year-old Julia and her family are traveling by flatboat on the Mississippi River from Louisville, KY, to Arkansas. The earthquake hit while they were docked at New Madrid. Julia and her brother survived. She was washed to the other side of the river to what is known as Madrid Bend, or Kentucky Bend. Rescued by an Indian and taken to the only white man living in the Bend, where her story of fear, heartache, confusion, and love, begins.
