This story follows the lives of three women, in the period before and after their marriages.
Alice Vavasor is a strong and independent woman. She was engaged to her selfish and reckless cousin George, but she broke off the engagement because she liked another man, John Grey. She got engaged to him and their marriage was approved. But, then, her cousin Kate, George’s sister, convinces her that she is not a woman who could live in the country. This makes Alice doubt about her decision and eventually changes her mind and instead decides to get married to George. Then, her life changes and things start developing the opposite way of planned.
The second woman is the widow Mrs. Greenow. There are two men fighting for her love and attention, the rich farmer Cheesacre and the soldier Captain Bellfield. She enjoys in their rivalry and thinks about which one to choose.
The third woman is Lady Glencora M'Cluskie. She is a very rich heiress, engaged to Plantagenet Palliser, who is also rich. But their marriage is not so rich, but it is very intense. In the past, she was engaged to Burgo Fitzgerald, an aristocratic idler, but Kate, Geroge’s sister, was the reason again, for their separation. But, regardless of all that, she still loves Burgo.
This story shows three parallel lives of three different women and traces their fortunes and their journey of discovering whether the social obligations and the personal happiness can ever coexist.
