Publisher Description
Forbidden love could turn the tide of war…or destroy the last hope of freedom.
Ilya Valerious was born to rule the city-state of Sorrena in her mother's footsteps—until the tyrannical emperor conquered her homeland.
Held hostage to ensure her people's obedience by the emperor's first captain, Lucien, she plots a dangerous gambit to free her people: seduce the captain, source information for a growing rebel movement, and take them all down from within.
Beyond Lucien's fearsome, masked appearance and powerful magic is a man trying to fulfill the emperor's promise of peace and prosperity. A task that would be easier if the captive heirs under his watch would finally submit to the emperor's rule. One in particular, Ilya, breathes defiance despite Lucien's efforts to protect her from herself and win her to the emperor's side.
She's a dangerous temptation he can ill afford, especially as she starts to uncover long-buried secrets that have him questioning not only his own past and his role in the empire, but the emperor he's sworn his life to.
When the fate of an empire rests on a knife's edge, Ilya and Lucien must decide if their blossoming love is worth sacrificing everything they've worked for. But only if the emperor doesn't kill them first.
This enemies-to-lovers epic fantasy romance filled with warring kingdoms, magic, life-changing romance, and intrigue will appeal to fans of The Bridge Kingdom and The Serpent and the Wings of Night.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Van Dyke (The Alice Curse) wraps an enemies-to-lovers romance inside a dramatic fantasy of politics and rebellion. When Emperor Ryszard's tyrannical campaign of taking over neighboring kingdoms extends to the city-state of Sorrena, his illusionist first in command, Lucien, collects Sorrena's heir, Ilya, to join the emperor's "honored guests," once-powerful captives of other lands he's conquered. Determined to help the rebels who are rumored to be plotting against Ryszard, Ilya plans to seduce Lucien to gain access to information in his private chambers. As the duo become genuinely close, however, Ilya uncovers a secret about Lucien's past that has him reevaluating his role in Ryszard's reign of terror. Van Dyke crafts characters with both intelligence and heart and creates a fascinating, if underutilized, religious magic system. Though the political machinations lack subtlety, the ever-changing alliances keep the pages flying by, and the tension between Lucien's obligations to the crown and his love for Ilya resonates emotionally. Fans of thoughtful romantasy will find this a worthwhile diversion.
Customer Reviews
Very much enjoyed
As an ARC reader I have certain expectations for the books I read. One of those expectations being engaging enough for me to not only enjoy the story but finish it, this book did that.
This story is full of suspense, enemies to lovers, and a captivating story. I found that I had a hard time putting this story down no matter how busy I became. This story captivated me with the characters and tribulations they went through. I bonded very easily to Ilya (one of the main characters). The details helped me easily bring this story to life in my mind. Overall I would say it was very well written and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good Enemies to lovers story especially when paired with a protector angle.
