Captive: Three Years at Belle-Île

Nineteenth-century France saw the emergence of a bleak institution—the juvenile detention center. One such center, on the island of Belle-Île-en-Mer, subjected children to forced manual labor, corporal punishment, and terrible conditions. "Locked Up" is the real-life story of Mathurin Réto, a young boy sent to Belle-Île-en-Mer whose fate was forever changed as a result.
