Like courtside seats at the Wimbledon final, Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel about a single-minded tennis champ’s comeback is so close to the action you’ll smell the chalk. In 1994, Carrie Soto is a 37-year-old former superstar who has decided to cut her retirement short and reclaim her record for Grand Slam titles. As she whips herself back into shape with her beloved father as coach, we see that Carrie is self-confident to the point of arrogance and completely unconcerned with being the most popular player in the locker room. But to get back to where she used to be, she needs to train with a past fling who’s also seeking his last moment of glory. Like in her ’70s-rock-set smash, Daisy Jones & The Six, Reid has a great eye for small, nostalgic details. Ultimately, this is a character study of one kick-ass woman who remains true to herself even while staring down her own doubts.

Carrie Soto is back!
I started reading Carrie Soto is back because there was an excerpt at end of in Daisy Jones and The Six. (so so so good) and couldn’t wait to buy the book. The only reason for the 4 star rating is because ….I love tennis and there is a lot of tennis in the story….and maybe for someone who isn’t in to it at all, they might not totally 5 star love….but, tennis or not, male or female, Carrie is so relatable, and for so many reasons. The book brings an athlete’s inner thoughts alive in a way that you can’t help yourself from being her biggest fan if not wanting to be just like her! It’s so well written!
When you can’t put it down …
