Answering an SOS from a planet stricken by a mysterious weapon, the crew brings aboard Anke, the lone survivor and a whiz-kid programmer who wants to stop what he calls the "Deadworld Code," a high-tech, planet-destroying weapon developed by forces preferring profit to people. Rapid-fire adventures spiked with army jargon and balanced with touching resolutions of personal conflicts keep the pages turning. Add in a charming found family—and even a space-faring cat—and this spirited space opera is a resounding success.

Great book
Cascade Failure fails to capture
Cascade Failure starts off like it’s going to be a decent science fiction/space opera novel. There are a few passages where the story is interesting but it immediately bogs down in long and drawn out snarky crew conversations. I did appreciate the strong female characters. There are too many gritty psychology 101 character self-insights. Tried and true cliche rough edged characters with hearts of gold. The narrative glazes right over glaring flaws with breathtaking plot conveniences. This is a great science fiction novel for readers who aren’t fans of science fiction so much but who do enjoy a sci-fi novel that is 75% sarcastic conversation.
