PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Bestseller Coben (Hold Tight) has a knack for taking everyday nightmares and playing with life s endless what ifs, as shown in this stand-alone thriller, a tightly choreographed dance of guilt and innocence, forgiveness and retribution. Frank Tremont, a world-weary, near-retirement investigator for New Jersey s Essex County, has to face his failure to solve his last case the disappearance of a teenage girl. Meanwhile, Dan Mercer stands accused of being a sexual predator thanks to the ambush journalism of Wendy Tynes, a tabloid TV reporter, who must cope with her husband s death caused by a drunken driver as well as reckon with the possibility of Mercer s innocence. When Tynes finds a link between a father of one of Mercer s alleged victims and others felled by scandal, she could become a killer s next victim. If the wealth of characters dilutes the suspense, Coben gives readers lots to think about when judging rights and wrongs. 500,000 first printing; 12-city author tour.
Customer Reviews
This is a really good story but…
It’s so complicated! Maybe this is what happened, maybe that’s the person who did it, maybe it’s a different person who did it, maybe they did it for this reason, no they did it for that reason, no they didn’t really do it, someone else did. But did they? I wish I had taken notes from the beginning!
It’s all about forgiveness
It seems odd for a mystery-thriller, but this is what comes to mind to kick off this review - “A fun read!”
Properly crafted: people’s motivations fit with their actions, which lends credibility to the entire plot. I liked the casual writing style - just the right amount of sarcasm and snark. Good character development, though we don’t go super deep into anyone here, that’s not a criticism at all - overall it was an enjoyable page-turner. Normally I would’ve given this four stars because I’m tight with fives and this isn’t likely to go down as a great literary work, but currently it only has an even 4-star rating, and deserves more than that. I will definitely check out more from this author!
Awesome read
Surprise ending and didn’t have all the curse words and garbage that is in most books. Love it!
