Publisher Description

Ribbon-work is one of many crafts invented by American Indians [1]. It first began appearing around 1800, having been introduced by French traders following the French Revolution (1797-1799). A new market was needed by the ribbon industry and Great Lakes tribes provided that market. [2] Ribbon-work is basically a way to bind the edge of wool cloth. Over the years this became a multiple ribbon design. One type of ribbon-work can be called the center line four ribbon or six ribbon types. It is used on men's straight dance clothes, women's skirts, men and women's blankets and occasionally street clothes. You can even see ribbon-work on today's towels and pillow cases.
