Publisher Description

The gable paintings of the world-famous Chapel Bridge in Lucerne are a highly interesting “open” history book. They comprise important events of the history of Lucerne and Switzerland.
During the night of August 17, 1993, a devastating fire almost completely destroyed the Chapel Bridge, one of Switzerland’s most famous landmarks and symbol of the city of Lucerne. Of the 111 paintings, which at the time used to adorn the gables of the 14th century wooden bridge, the fire destroyed 86. Among the 76 paintings of the most important series, which is about the history of Lucerne and the Swiss Confederation, three quarters were either severely or completely destroyed.
