Good but way too hyped
I think for a debut novel, this book was actually pretty good. I liked the characters and how unique and complex they were. The main character of the book is very strong and really fights for what she believes in. The plot of the story was intriguing and I found myself very interested in the world and magic. This issue I had with it was one, the romance. The author makes the prince and the main character hate each-other for the majority of the book and for some reason they don’t kill each other when they meet and instead instantly find an attraction towards each other. I also thought the pacing of the book was slow. Not much really happens in this book and I wished more did. We don’t have a lot going on until the end and that just made it hard to keep going. But overall I’d say this is a solid book. I think a lot of people love it way too much but as a debut novel I didn’t expect much to begin with anyway. Great effort and great story.

Excellent Debut
Tomi Adeyemi is brilliant in this novel that mixes fantasy, with deep themes of culture, family, spirituality, oppression, and perseverance. Love that she didn’t take a traditional stance of a European antagonist. Comparing her to any other author is missing the point. Excellent read for all ages.
